All the cool kids tell us that sitting’s the new smoking.

If that’s true, most of us are halfway through a pack before lunch, whether at home, in an office, or welded to a co-working desk in full prawn posture (why is it so comfy though).

A few tiny habits to save your posture when your desk job has you glued to your laptop.

This isn’t another smug riff on ditching your desk job and retraining as a surf coach. It’s about making micro-moves and tiny rebellions against the tyranny of the chair.

Read on for a simple list of stackable movement habits you can do from anywhere.

1. Sit Happens

Yep, you need to sit down, but your body is not designed to hold a static shape for eight hours while your life force is slowly siphoned out into Excel.

So fidget away, desk dwellers.

Try this:

  • Swap chairs or positions: chair in the morning, yoga ball after lunch, or do some advanced-level sitting on the floor.  Kneel, squat, cross-leg, one leg out, both legs out. Z-sit. Rotate.

  • Even if you’re in the corporate-est of corporate offices, you can shift your weight, roll your shoulders, or try sitting cross legged in the chair.

2. Standing Isn’t the Hero You Think It Is

Standing desks are great – but long, static use in one position can cause back, leg, or circulation issues, and the benefits vanish if you don’t keep moving.

Try these things with a standing desk:

  • Shift your weight side to side.

  • Unlock your knees.

  • Prop one foot on a box, stool, or even your bag.

  • Stand in tree pose.

  • Alternate between standing and sitting.

  • Stick on some music and have a little desk-groove. This set by Mehdi El-Aquil never fails to set the shoulders to wigglin’.

3. The Pomodoro Shuffle

Set an alarm on your phone - deep work for 25 minutes, take five off. Old trick, still gold. But instead of doom-scrolling or pretending to tidy your inbox in your break, move.

Ideas for home or office:

  • Walk to the window and focus on something far away, ideally some nice blue sky (your eyes are crying out for help).

  • Make a cuppa.

  • Touch your toes..

  • Two push-ups, five air squats, one yoga pose, one minute of dancing or pacing - whatever feels less weird around other people. If you work from home, go wild.

  • Go and have a nice chat with someone

4. Don’t Collapse on the Sofa (or in the Pub)

After work, your sofa’s siren call is hard to resist.  Your local pub whispers even louder. Ignore both - for half an hour, at least.

  • Go outside. Even a ten-minute walk resets your head.

  • Surf? Swim? Yoga? Gym? Garden? Walk home a longer way? Do anything that reminds your body it’s not a desk accessory.

  • Try this very short yoga sequence when you get home to shake off the work day (plus sneakily train for a surf trip).

  • If you’re wiped out, try yin yoga or legs-up-the-wall. Feels lovely, zero effort.

5. Make It Easy

Behaviour-science whizz BJ Fogg says success hides in the small stuff.

  • Keep a resistance band or small weight in your drawer and sneak in a few bicep curls during a call (camera off, obviously).

  • Leave a yoga mat where you’ll trip over it at home.

  • Stick a post-it on your screen: Move your shoulders. Walk around.

  • Habit stack: every time you:
    • make tea, do 10 air squats.
    • send an email, roll your shoulders.
    • close a tab, take three deep breaths.
    • finish a video call, do 10 pop-ups on the floor

All tiny actions, built onto existing ones.

A Mini Yoga Flow for Desk Survivors

(5 minutes. Works anywhere there’s floor space - yes, even the office if you’re brave.)

  1. Cat-Cow – move with your breath, five rounds.

  2. Thread the Needle – twist and open your upper back.

  3. Low Lunge – sink in, open the hips.

  4. Standing Forward Fold – let gravity do the work.

  5. Bridge Pose – five slow lifts to wake up the glutes.

  6. Legs Up the Wall – end here, breathe deeply.

Simple Strength Snack

  • Push-ups (knees or toes, or use the desk) x 10
  • World’s Greatest Stretch - 5 x per side
  • Cossack Squats - 5 x per side
  • Squat Reach - 5 x per side
  • Glute bridges (or squeeze your bum while standing for stealth fitness) x 10

Do one round every time you make tea or coffee.

A little movement goes a long way
