Over the last two seasons working with Soul & Surf, I've spent a lot of time observing the surf community—not just the surfing itself, but the bodies that make it possible.

Watching instructors spend hours standing in moving currents. Photographers navigating the ocean with heavy equipment. Surfers paddling, popping up, wiping out, twisting, turning, and responding to the ever-changing movement of the sea. It has given me a deep appreciation for just how much our bodies do for us in our surfing wellness journeys.

Surfing asks a lot of the body. It requires strength, mobility, balance, coordination, endurance, and the ability to move through multiple planes of motion. This is exactly why dedicated surf recovery is so important. Every wave demands a conversation between body and mind.

Beyond Yoga: Why Surf Massage is Essential

Yoga has long been recognized as a powerful companion to surfing. It helps maintain mobility and flexibility, improves body awareness, and teaches us how to stay calm, present, and responsive both on and off the board.

What I’ve noticed, however, is that surf massage and post-surf bodywork are often overlooked as part of that conversation. There can be a tendency to see massage as a luxury—a treat for relaxation rather than a valuable tool for recovery and wellbeing.

How Holistic Bodywork Aids Post-Surf Recovery

Yet when we look more closely, holistic bodywork supports the body on so many levels. Massage helps regulate the nervous system, encouraging the body to shift out of a constant state of stress and into a place where healing and recovery can happen more effectively. Improved circulation allows blood and oxygen to reach tissues more efficiently, helping muscles recover from the demands placed upon them.

Restoring Movement and Mobility for Surfers

The body is constantly adapting to what we ask of it. Hours of paddling, repetitive movement patterns, impact from wipeouts, long periods standing in the ocean, and everyday life all leave their mark. Over time, tension accumulates and movement patterns can become restricted.

Creating space within the body matters, especially when we talk about vital mobility for surfers. A body that feels spacious is often a body that moves more freely. Mobility through the spine, healthy fascia, balanced muscle function, and a strong connection between body and mind all contribute to how we move, recover, and perform.

Investing in Long-Term Surfing Wellness

For me, holistic therapy and bodywork is not simply about addressing discomfort. It's about supporting the body's natural ability to heal, adapt, and function well. It's about helping people reconnect with their bodies so they can return to the water feeling more mobile, more stable, and more resilient.

Perhaps it's time to shift the narrative. Rather than viewing a surf massage as an occasional indulgence, we might begin to see it as an investment in the very thing that carries us through life. The body supports us through every wave we catch, every step we take, every adventure we pursue. When we take care of our bodies, they are better able to take care of us.
