November 2019 || March 2020

Take your surfing to the next level with us in Portugal, with two intermediate courses available in our quieter season.

Autumn and Spring in the Algarve are wonderful. Properly wonderful.  The beaches are quieter, the waves more consistent, and we have the luxury of the south coast, which generally doesn’t work in the summer.

The south coast is littered with lovely, mellow points, reefs and beach breaks. We aren’t looking for the gnarliest waves, and will make sure that we try as much as possible to get you the best waves for progression.

Who is this for?

These courses are suitable for improver surfers who are consistently getting to their feet in the white water, and are looking to expand their technical knowledge and ocean confidence, as well as the intermediates who are already comfortable in a lineup. We will be looking at turns, managing boards in bigger waves, duck diving (or turtle rolling on bigger boards) and so much more. We will also use video analysis and theory to enhance our water time, as well as yoga, pranayama and meditation to get you as primed as you can be for the surf.

If you are serious about improving your surfing, then come and escape the summer crowds and score some winter swells that’ll allow you to progress.

Improver

You’ll be an improver or a low end intermediate, someone that has had some lessons, catching white water waves on a regular basis and you can perform basic turns left and right. You will also show that you can surf in a safe manner.
You may have even caught a couple of unbroken waves and are experienced trimming down the wave.

What will you learn?

  • Advanced safety, making it specific to the spots we surf as well as the waves that you may surf at home.
  • We will get specific about your stance, your body position and how it will affect your rides.
  • We will work with you to improve your popup technique
  • You will improve the efficiency and techniques paddle strokes enabling you to build on your endurance as well as explosiveness.
  • You will learn how to negotiate the inside breaking waves and how to paddle out to unbroken waves.
  • You will learn the difference in white water waves and unbroken waves and learn how to catch a wave before it breaks.
  • You will understand the difference between fore hand and back hand or Front side and backside as well as understanding the basics of trimming along a wave.
  • We will use video feedback sessions to help you take your progression to the next level, looking at and analysing your surfing. Video analysis is the best way to see your surfing, looking at the positives, how to correct any mistakes and improve on your technique.

Theory

As part of your coaching we will run theory sessions on location at the beach, in the hotel as well as in the pool.

You will cover the following topics.

  • Priority & line ups
  • How to get through waves using a turtle roll
  • The difference between a white water (broken wave) and unbroken wave
  • Wave forecasting
  • Surfboards and different forms of surfing

Intermediate

You will be a intermediate surfer, proficient in the water, able to paddle through waves unassisted and can negotiate your way around a line up. You will be able to catch head high waves and can trim left and right on a variety of different waves.

What will you learn?

  • We will search the coast for the best waves of the day.
  • We will work with you to understand new more challenging surf spots.
  • We will help you to maximise your wave count and how to find the fastest trimming line and when and what type of manoeuvres to perform.
  • We will work with you through video analysis sessions to help improve techniques, body positions, position on the wave, carving turns cutbacks and floaters.

Theory

You will cover the following topics.

  • Improving and speeding up your Pop-Up to make more critical drops
  • Duck diving
  • ‘Spot X’ the best place on any given wave for a surfer to take off.
  • Wave forecasting
  • Surfboards and different forms of surfing
