the surfer

Let's be honest, this ain't Indonesia, but how India has kept off the surf radar for so long we don’t know. With warm water waves rolling into idyllic, empty, tropical beaches all year long the secret won’t be safe for long!

Ed will take you to the best local surf for your ability each morning, which could be Mermaids our local beach a couple of minutes walk from the house, Ed's Wave, a rocky point,  just north of here, Shirley's to the south, our favourite jetty break Jengos or Kovalam’s reef. There's still room for discovery so we could go further afield to explore new unridden surf-spots. The waves are mainly fast breaking beach-breaks favouring lefts with the odd river-mouth, jetty or a man-made reef. The surf is fun yet breaks pretty fast on the sandbanks, it’s hardly ever flat and other surfers are few and far between. Combine that with plenty of scope to explore and find new breaks and you’ve got a pretty unique surfing environment.

The two months pre and post monsoon (monsoon is June til September) is when the swell is consistently larger and more challenging with waves averaging about 3-4ft. Otherwise the waves are mainly in the waist to shoulder high range. Check Magicseaweed.com which has nearby Kovalam for current and historical detail. (Note: A 3.5ft swell at 12s  in Kovalam usually produces head-high waves up the coast here)

Exploration
If you're keen to explore and maybe name your own breaks there's plenty of opportunity in this country so let us know in advance, we'll spend some time checking Google Earth and maybe we can plan a few days on the road together discovering unridden waves.

Swell Season
The peak tourist season, and dryest months, of December & January coincide with the small swell season yet even then it's still at least knee to shoulder high. The waves are generally bigger and there’s more of them in Oct/Nov and Mar/Apr/May but there’s more chance of storms in these months.

Equipment
We have 8 boards from 6'2" to 8'2"  available for rent for beginners/intermediates at £7.50 for the whole day plus we have a supply of wax and leashes (but replacements are very hard to come by here)
Otherwise we recommend you bring your own short-boards, fish or longboards and all other equipment including leashes, warm water wax, reef boots (if you're keen to explore the east coast lava points), rash vest, sun protection and ding repair kit as the nearest surf shops are over a day away from here..

Surfing Experience
The surf here and our set-up is suitable for learners through to experts. However, we recommend that you have at least a few weeks surfing under your belt and can stand-up comfortably on waves before you arrive. Ed will gladly pass on tips whilst we surf together each morning but if you you would like more formal lessons we have managed to secure an indpendent ISA trained surf-instructor and we can arrange booking lessons with him from December 2011 onwards. Email Sofie here to express interest in advance, but if you're arriving any time after December we can organise lessons when you arrive if you prefer.

A fantastic resource for all things surf related in India can be found here at www.surfingindia.net These Surfing Swamis have been exploring India's surf potential for years, they are the inspiration for us opening our doors and we highly recommend paying them a visit whilst in India. Why not tag a week on before or after your stay with us?
